On the occasion of the performance Go Figure by Israeli director, choreographer and dancer Sharon Fridman, LAC edu is pleased to offer a workshop with the creator of the INA Practice dedicated to professional dancers, contemporary dance students and contact dancers with and without disabilities

Sharon Fridman is an Israeli director, choreographer and dancer. He is presenting the show Go Figure at LAC on Aprile16th, and on the occasion, he will extend his stay in Lugano to offer a workshop to professional dancers and contemporary dance students with and without disabilities.

Fridman uses and will teach INA Practice, an approach which gets its name from the coregrapher’s mother, Ina, who suffered from Arnold Chiari syndrome, a rare pathology that disrupts the perception of balance and requires sufferers a reference to be able to recognize the position of their own body. Building on this concept, Fridman explores INA Practice, which focuses on the space that the body occupies and needs to move in relation to another body and the space around it. With the INA Practice, every movement is pre-programmed before it's executed, emphasizing precision and intentionality in every moment.

The focus of this language is placed on the concept of gravity, on discovering its most unexplored aspects. How is my body capable of manipulating the weight of the other ? What are the active centres that allow me to carry out this manipulation ? What new forms of movement can I generate from there ? Dancers and students under the guidance of Fridman can experience the pratice, understand the workings of their own bodies to transform them into a bridge for connecting with the others. Movement implies the transmission of an element to which it was previously connected. It's a direct expression of what happens within us; movement isn't merely a tool for expression but an internal and irreversible necessity.

Application by CV selection, to be submitted no later than 05.04.2024 at lac.edu@lugano.ch.

Growing up in Pardes Hanna, Israel, he began dancing at the age of six with the Israeli folklore group Hora Pardes Hanna with choreographer Dado Kraus. Ten years later, he began volunteering at llanit, the psychiatric hospital where his mother, Ina, worked. The work group helped patients through body movement therapy.
In 1995, he began studying contemporary dance and, at the same time, started dancing with the Yehonatan Carmon Company at the TeI Aviv Opera House. He soon became a dancer in Ido Tadmor's company.
In 2000, with the support of the Municipality of Pardes Hanna, he created the dance group Fraza, whose aim was to make contemporary dance known locally. Thanks to this project, he presented his work at the Suzzanne Dellal Centre for Dance and Theatre, whose director was Yair Vardi. It was here that his work was performed for the first time.
In the same year, he began dancing for the Kibbutz Contemporary Dance Company and later for the Vertigo Dance Company, where he discovered a new body language known as Contact Improvisation. He participated in the creative process of the Vertigo Dance Company with The Birth of the Phoenix, which is still performed today. Furthermore, as a contemporary dancer, he has the opportunity to work with several independent choreographers such as Ronit Ziv, Emanuel Gat and Yossi Yungman, among others.
In 2003, he began working as artistic coordinator and choreographer on tours in South America and Europe with the company Mayumana. In 2006, he arrived in Madrid, where he decided to settle down and resume his personal project: the Sharon Fridman Company. The company's first piece was presented at the Certamen Coreográfico in Madrid and won several awards for creation and production.

The technical basis he uses in his work focuses on the relationship between gravity and balance and is inspired by his mother, who was born with Arnold Chiari syndrome. Fridman develops a new body language: INA, Contact INcreation.
With this new language, he began a process of research into contact and how it represents us. Today, all his work is based on the INA Practice and is represented worldwide. Many pieces have received important awards, such as best performance for Free Fall (2015), best choreography for Erritu in 2019, first prize and audience award for Hasta dónde...? at the Certamen de Burgos-New York (2011) and best dance performance award at the Huesca Dance and Theatre Fair for Free Fall and All ways (2014 and 2017 respectively).
Today, a large number of companies and groups dance many of his creations, such as the National Dance Company of Spain, the National Dance Company of Paraguay, the Vertigo Dance Company of Israel, the Bora Dance Project of South Korea, the Kukai Dantza Company of the Basque Country, the Colectivo Cinético of Italy, the LaMov Company of Zaragoza, the Compagnie Jus de la Vie of Stockholm, the Bielefeld Ballet of Germany, the L'Explose Danza Company of Colombia, the COCO Company of Panama and Between heaven and earth of Jerusalem.

Since he started his personal project with the Sharon Fridman Company, he has co-produced several pieces together at the Mercat de les Flors, the Theatre of Ludwigshafen, the Autumn Festival in spring, Madrid en danza and the Auditorium of Tenerife, among others.

Today, the Sharon Fridman Company has its residency at the Teatro Francisco Rabal de Pinto (Madrid), where it carries out projects with the community and where Fridman creates her works. In recent years, she directed the 2018 Gvamin festival at the Suzanne Dellal Center in Tel Aviv and Danzamos Conde Duque in Madrid (2017).

In 2022, the company celebrated its 15th anniversary with the premiere of a new work, Shape on us, in which the viewer sees the fourth wall lifted to be a direct witness of a process of choreographic creation and the intense relationship between dance and life.

Fridman currently combines his work as company director with collaborations as guest choreographer, artistic director and lighting designer in various organisations. These include the works Crudo Equilibrio, created for Compañía L'Explose (Colombia), Equilibrio, Espacio Creativo Foundation (Panama), Corazón de carne, Ka'et Ensemble (Israel), Jondo, Eduardo Guerrero Company (Spain), Yarin, Kukai Dantza (Spain), Jerusalem, Theater Bielefeld (Germany) or, soon, Berro, a creation for Nova Galega de Danza (Spain) and Europa, co-directed with Luis Luque Cabrera and co-produced with Las Naves del Español, (Spain).
In September 2023, the complete version of the work Go Figure was presented, co-produced by Festival Oriente-Occidente in Rovereto (Italy).

The event is part of the programme of ORME...on the road 2024, the review connected to the biennial event ORME - International Festival of Inclusive Arts of Southern Switzerland. Eighth edition from 21 to 25 May 2025 in Lugano.
