He places us in front of a mirror which reveals us to be inadequate and indifferent spectators when faced with the complexities and tragedies of life.

Nanni Moretti has chosen Natalia Ginzburg's "theatre of chatter" to tell us about disharmonious families, people who are content to live their lives without enthusiasm and are weak human beings with inconsistent ethical values. With his ironic gaze, he opens up the curtain on domestic intimacies in which conflict gives way to indifference, revealing the fatuity of emotionally and morally inept men and women.
A leading figure in 20th-century Italian literature, Ginzburg plays with the values dear to bourgeois society: marriage, fidelity, motherhood, and friendship are all treated with words of a levity that reveals all their fragility. This extreme lightness of touch becomes a magnifying glass, a cold interpretation key, which converts the otherwise tragic facts of the protagonists' lives into comedy. And, at the same time, it highlights the defects of a society that remains indifferent to the “facts of life”, that never really participates, and that removes that small sense of guilt that sometimes, timidly, rises to the surface.
